The Hinterkaifeck murders, also known as one of the creepiest and most puzzling unsolved murder case in German history, is a story that is full of secrets, rumors, and of course a very gory crime scene.
On April 4, 1922, a man by the name of Lorenz Schlittenbauer made a horrifying discovery, when he went to check on his neighbors, the Gruber family, and found the disfigured bodies of the 5 family members and their maid.
Hinterkaifeck is a small Bavarian farmstead, located about 70 kilometers north of Munich, Germany. On the farm lived the couple Andreas and Cazilia Gruber with their widowed daughter Victoria Gabriel, and her two children, Cazilia and Joseph, and their then maid, Maria Baumgartner.

The residences of Hinterkaifeck seemed to carry many secrets, and lots of rumors circulated around about them. Andreas Gruber was known as a very cruel and abusive man, and it was said that he had married his wife, Cazilia Gruber, whom was the owner of Hinterkaifeck, just because he wanted a piece of the farm for himself. It was also said that Victoria had not been the only child of Andreas and Cazilia, but the other children had died long before the time of the murders due to the violent nature of their father.
Yet, the biggest scandal of all surrounding the family, was a story of an abusive incestous relationship between Andreas and his daughter Victoria, in which baby Joseph was suspected to be the aftermath of. The abuse of Andreas to his daughter was discovered when a previous maid of theirs, whom had quit 6 months prior to the attack, saw him trying to rape his daughter and reported the incident to the police.
Due to this, Victoria Gabriel, whom had been married before to a man named Karl Gabriel, that had reportedly been killed in France during the first World War, was having a very hard time getting remarried. Although she was involved in a long time romantic relationship with their neighbor, Lorenz Shclittenbauer, they ended up breaking it off after a confrontation between him and her father.
Though afterwards Shclittenbauer became a family friend, and this is why he was the first person that people started questioning about the Gruber family when they failed to show up to multiple places that they routinely visited.
Before the bodies of the Gruber families where discovered, in the days following the murder from April 1st to April 3rd, multiple people reported seeing weird things in Hinterkaifeck. One person saw two figures standing in the woods near the farm, and another saw the oven being lit and weird smells coming from the chimney. This later further supported the theory that the killer may have been living in the attic of the farm for multiple days before the murder.
This theory started circulating due to the weird happenings that members of the Gruber family themselves started mentioning to people days before the attack. Multiple witnesses later reported hearing from Victoria that in the weeks prior to the murder, she had felt like she was constantly being watched, and that she occasionally saw a man following her home from the woods. Their longtime maid, also stated that she had mainly left the farm after believing it to be haunted due to hearing weird noises constantly coming from the attic.
Yet, this was just the beginning, because things were about to get even creepier on the day of the murder.
